Candlelight service for All Souls Day

Candlelight service for All Souls Day

Bristol Memorial Woodlands is to hold a candlelit service of remembrance on Sunday October 30 to mark All Souls Day, when people remember loved ones who have departed.

The service was suspended during the Covid pandemic, but this year will return with a secular service outside the chapel, where anyone who wishes to remember a loved one is invited to join in.

Those attending are given a commemorative candle to hold throughout the half hour service which is then placed to form a circle of light around a commemorative tree.

Christopher Baker, founder of the Memorial Woodlands, said: “The event was originally designed for the families of those buried at the Memorial Woodlands, but we have extended it to welcome anyone who wishes to remember a loved one on this day.

“All Souls Day has significance in many religions and is celebrated in Eastern Europe and as the Day of The Dead in other civilisations. There is a tradition in both the Catholic Church and the Church of England Church. At our service we welcome all to join together in this very special atmospheric act of remembrance.”

The service starts at 6.00pm on Sunday October 30. Guests are asked to arrive between 5.30pm and 6pm to receive their candles and light refreshments are served in the Georgian reception rooms after the ceremony.

Guests are advised to wear warm clothing for the outdoor event and to email admin@memorialwoodlands.com stating their attendance so that catering can be supplied. Further information: www.memorialwoodlands.com.
