Clarke Willmott makes massive strides in ESG

National law firm Clarke Willmott LLP has reported significant progress in reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility in 2024/5.

As part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework, the firm has promoted workplace inclusivity, supported local communities, and reduced its environmental footprint.

Karen Higgins, head of ESG at Clarke Willmott, says commitment to ESG is increasingly important to both investors and consumers who are looking for businesses that are responsible and sustainable.

“ESG is vital to the firm's long-term success, driving positive change in communities and the environment while reflecting our commitment to ethical practices and a more diverse workplace,” she said.

The firm’s environmental achievements in 2024 include the verification of its net-zero target and the success of office relocations that reduced the firm’s carbon footprint.

The Bristol office, which moved to Assembly C last year, downsized by 65 per cent, moving from an energy rating of D to EPC A, while the Cardiff office moved to Callaghan Square in the city centre, with easy access to public transport.

And now Clarke Willmott’s “Small Change, Big Difference” campaign has been shortlisted in the best ESG initiative category at this year’s People in Law Awards, the winners of which will be announced on 1st May.

“Achieving net-zero verification for our 2040 target and reducing emissions through initiatives like office relocations shows our dedication to real, measurable change,” added Karen Higgins.

Last year Clarke Willmott demonstrated its strong commitment to community engagement, volunteering 500 hours and bringing the total raised for charity by the firm to just under £200,000.

“Through partnerships with local charities, volunteering efforts, and fundraising initiatives, the firm continues to make a meaningful impact,” says Daniel Jones, director of HR at Clarke Willmott.

“Clarke Willmott committed to social mobility by mentoring 19 students through the Social Mobility Foundation and supported a further 24 with employability skills and career advice, as well as providing feedback on personal statements.

“We also focused on community engagement through tree planting in Cardiff, enhancing green spaces in Bristol, and offering matched funding and volunteering days for employees.”

When it comes to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ED&I) – a core component of the social aspect of ESG framework – the law firm continues to make strides, says Daniel Jones.

“Through initiatives like reverse mentoring and hosting events that promote dialogue, we’re taking meaningful steps to foster an inclusive culture within the firm and the wider legal profession.

“By signing up to charters and running initiatives such as National Inclusion Week, we’re building a workplace that celebrates diversity and drives real change both inside and outside the firm.

“Reverse mentoring has been a particularly valuable experience, allowing senior leaders to learn directly from employees with diverse backgrounds.”

Clarke Willmott is also dedicated to supporting employee wellbeing, embedding mental health and work-life balance into its culture as part of its ESG commitment.

As a signatory of the Mindful Employer Charter , Mindful Business Charter and the Mental Health at Work Commitment, the firm continues to prioritise its staff.

“Our commitment to mental health and wellbeing isn’t just a box-ticking exercise – it’s something we’ve embedded into the way we work,” says Daniel Jones.

“Signing up to initiatives like the Mindful Employer Charter and the Mental Health at Work Commitment helps ensure our people feel supported both professionally and personally.

“We’re also proud to see our focus on work-life balance recognised in the 2024 Roll on Friday poll - it reflects our ongoing efforts to create a workplace where everyone can thrive.”

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, Clarke Willmott is strategically positioned to build on its progress and continue driving positive change.

The second year of the UWE Futures programme, which aims to improve diversity in industries in Bristol and create a new talent pipeline, will see legal firms RPC and Foot Anstey join Clarke Willmott, Burges Salmon, Osborne Clarke and Simmons & Simmons, while TV and film production company Plimsoll Productions has also signed up to the initiative.

Daniel Jones said: “With a strong focus on its people, the firm plans to further enhance its efforts in creating an inclusive, supportive work environment.

“It will also continue to partner with clients, providing innovative legal solutions that contribute to sustainable growth and social responsibility.”

Clarke Willmott is a national law firm with offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton, and Taunton.
