Cornwall Council is inviting residents to take part in the next 'Cornwall We Want’ live event, where they will be talking about the positive changes residents would like to see after the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the third online event of its kind from Cornwall Council, and will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, August 25.

A virtual panel will hear from people across Cornwall about a range of subjects, from how cycling routes can be improved, to ways that they can carry on volunteering and have more time for being involved in their community.

Cornwall Council portfolio holder for Housing, Andrew Mitchell said: “We've heard from lots of people in Cornwall who are keen to continue working from home more, and many who’ve enjoyed walking and cycling more often. We've also heard from people who have started to volunteer during the Covid-19 pandemic and would like to continue supporting those who need some help.

“We want to know if the changes over the past few months have made you think again about what matters to you, your family, your business or your community? What will you change about how you live and/or work?”

People across Cornwall have been asked to share their thoughts and ideas through videos, with a selection of clips being played during the live event and discussed by the panel. You can submit your video by emailing haveyoursay@cornwall.gov.uk

Cllr Mitchell added: “We know that many more businesses will be considering their policies now on working from home, and the council is looking at how it will move forward with homeworking. Our staff are now more used to working from home, but we know that for some people this has been a challenge so it’s important to consider the negatives too and how these can be overcome.”

Cornwall Councillor portfolio holder for transport, Geoff Brown said: “We’re committed to making it easier for people to make choices about how they travel. By considering walking, cycling or taking more sustainable methods of transport wherever possible, we can help the environment and our health too.

“For example, we’re working to encourage more people to use public transport in line with our commitment to tackle the climate emergency.  We’re investing in a One Public Transport System for Cornwall which will provide a seamless integrated network for Cornwall to make it as easy and convenient as possible for residents and visitors to use all forms of public transport.  We’re also encouraging more people to cycle as we invest in a network of cycle routes across Cornwall.  These initiatives all play a part in encouraging residents to move away from using cars.”

More staff working from home has saved Cornwall Council thousands of commuter miles already and contributes to promoting green and active travel under its climate change action plan to help Cornwall become carbon neutral by 2030 including:

  • bringing in more cycle and walking paths,

  • supporting town centre pedestrianisation schemes,

  • transforming its fleet to use cleaner and renewable fuels,

  • introducing a £23m reduced bus fares pilot,

  • developing sustainable travel schemes for staff and;

  • expanding Cornwall’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The event will take place live on Cornwall Council’s Facebook page on Tuesday 25 August, 7-8pm. You can register your interest on Facebook
