Local charity offering suicide support announces 2024 ‘Glimmer of Light' event

A local charity dedicated to providing support to families affected by suicide has announced details of its 2024 flagship event, Glimmer of Light.

An annual gathering, which marks World Suicide Prevention Day, the event hosted by Sunflowers Suicide Support will this year take place at the serene Bristol Memorial Woodlands, near Thornbury on 15 September.

Organisers are planning a poignant evening to remember those lost to suicide. Guests will take a moment of silence before watching the sun set and then lighting a lantern, symbolising an effort to bring light and hope to the issue.

Chloe Webb, operations manager at Sunflowers Suicide Support, said: “This event offers a quiet and reflective space for remembrance, solidarity and healing, so people are not alone in their thoughts. We’ll watch the sunset together, and each of us will have the opportunity to light a lantern, illuminating the darkness surrounding suicide.

“We’ll reflect on the lives lost to suicide and the impact it has on individuals and communities worldwide. While the event may be emotionally charged it’s also a platform to discuss suicide openly, share experiences and explore ways to support those in need.

“We’re also encouraging guests to contribute to the evening with a poem, a story or a song from our playlist which may hold significance to them.

“This is an annual event and we’re really excited to be hosting it this year within the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of Bristol Memorial Woodlands.”

Gloucestershire-based Sunflowers Suicide Support is renowned for its dedication in helping individuals and families bereaved or affected in any way by suicide. The charity offers a range of services including providing training and qualifications related to suicide intervention, grief and suicide bereavement; raising awareness; and ensuring people affected by suicide have access to appropriate and effective support.

"I strongly believe in the power of community and the importance of creating spaces where people can come together to remember, to heal, and to find hope," said Mireille Hayden, a grief and bereavement expert at Bristol Memorial Woodlands. "This event is not only about remembrance but also about shining a light on the importance of awareness and support.

“Our recent partnership with Sunflowers underscores Bristol Memorial Woodlands' commitment to providing compassionate care and support within the community, especially for those navigating the difficult journey of grief and loss. We will support the charity in various ways including hosting this event.”
