Bill and Jean celebrate 72 years of wedded bliss

A couple have celebrated an incredible 72 years of marriage at a care home in Wellington.

Bill and Jean Carr were married on 18th March 1950 at St James Church in Handsworth, Birmingham, near where they both grew up, and relocated to the South West after their wedding.

The ‘inseparable’ pair worked together for many years, including running their own double glazing business - West End Windows - in Bristol in the 1970s. They also spent six years in Canada before returning to live in Somerset.

Jean Carr was accompanied on her anniversary visit to see Bill in Camelot House and Lodge, the dementia care home where he is now a resident, by the couple’s son Mark.

Jean said: “We have never been apart for our anniversary, and this was a very special occasion.

“Bill isn’t a great talker now, although he was very chatty before his dementia, but we all had a lovely time reminiscing about old Birmingham with Richard on the activities team, who was also brought up there.

“And we thoroughly enjoyed the takeaway KFC the team laid on for us. Bill calls it ‘chicken in a bun' and it’s his absolute favourite.”

Camelot House and Lodge is run by award-winning care-providers Camelot Care who also have care homes in Bridgwater and Plymouth.
